History

1975

Founding of TERRIFIC, Inc.

TERRIFIC, Inc. was established in 1975 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit housing and human services organization. Our primary mission is to respond to families in crisis through community outreach and comprehensive support services.

1975

People Helpers’ Bank

Launched with over 100 volunteers to serve families and individuals in need across the community.

1979

TERRIFIC Inn I

Established in 1981, TERRIFIC Inn I is our flagship housing program. This 14-unit HUD 202-subsidized apartment building continues to provide safe, clean, and affordable housing to low-income tenants, including seniors and adults with mild developmental disabilities.

1987 – 2012

Grandma’s House®

TERRIFIC, Inc. founded Grandma’s House®, the first-in-the-nation, internationally recognized residential program for abused, neglected, and abandoned children, youth, and families living with HIV/AIDS, prenatal drug exposure, and other chronic health challenges.

Programs included: Grandma’s House I, Grandpa’s House, and Grandma’s House II.

1991 – 2012

Francois Xavier Bagnoud House

A residential program for children ages 12 to 18 living and thriving with HIV.

1994 – 2009

PEERS Program

A youth-focused prevention program targeting District of Columbia teens, parents, and youth-serving organizations.

TERRIFIC Inn No. 2

HIV Recapture and Respite Care, Retreat, and Training Center located at the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Farm (FXB).

1999

The Potter’s Vessel Program

HIV Case Management Services providing support, counseling, and resources for children placed in TERRIFIC, Inc.’s residential programs.

Funding Received

Received funding from the D.C. Office on Aging to operate Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) serving residents age 60 and older in Wards 1, 2, and 4.

2012

Grant Awarded

Awarded a grant from the D.C. Department of Health (HAHSTA) for the Older Adults and HIV Prevention Program. This initiative was later recognized as a “Best Practices Program” for reducing HIV transmission among adults 50 and older.

2014

Funding Awarded

Awarded funding from the Department of Health HAHSTA for the Prevention through Faith-Based Approaches for African American Women program.

Partnership with BOCA Pharmacy Group and expansion of non-medical case management services.

Specialized programming for LGBTQ+ and Same Gender Loving (SGL) older adults and older adults living with HIV, including:

- Pride Has No Age (2018)
- Pride 50th Anniversary of Stonewall (2019)

- Senior Mardi Gras (2022)
- Senior Resources Service Centers (Dancing with the Senior Stars, Agora Market Place, Tell Us Your Story, etc.)
